Google fixes Chrome bug that prevented attachment downloads on Mac/Windows

Google has acted quickly to roll back a change it introduced as part of a recent update to its Chrome web browser. Specifically, version 66.0.3359.181 (for Windows, Mac, and Linux) that started rolling out last week contained a bug that prevented downloads of attachments from services like Gmail.

A Google employee confirmed earlier today the change that caused the problem is being rolled back. Here’s what the exactly said:

Eng is rolling back this change in Chrome so the issue should resolve for most users in next few hours. We’re working with Gmail team to understand how we can prevent this issue in the future also.

The Chromium bug page where the issue is being discussed reveals it affected the Windows and Mac clients of the browser. So, it’s reasonable to say Linux users are unaffected.

As confirmed by an expert on the official Chrome support forum, once the roll back happens for you, it may be necessary to restart Chrome or reboot your machine in order to pick up the change.

A few complainants have confirmed the functionality is working as expected after the roll back.
